Fredagsbiten: Julafton, bjällerklang och tårar. Veckans fredagsbit är Joni Mitchells ”River”, från albumet Blue. En av världens vackraste och mest tolkade jullåtar – fast den inte alls var tänkt som en jullåt…

Det var kring julen 1970 och Joni Mitchell hade känt sig allt mer obekväm med den uppmärksamhet hon fick som artist, och behövde en paus från både liveframträdanden och relation. I samma veva hade hennes, inte helt okända, kille (Graham Nash) friat. Men Joni insåg att hon inte ville offra sin konstnärliga frihet för kärleken, så hon skickade ett telegram till Graham och gjorde slut och sen reste hon ensam iväg till Europa.

“I just started thinking, my grandmother was a frustrated poet and musician. She kicked the kitchen door off of the hinges on the farm. I thought about my paternal grandmother who wept for the last time in her life at 14 behind some barn because she wanted a piano and said, ‘Dry your eyes, you silly girl, you’ll never have a piano.’”

“I thought, maybe I’m the one that got the gene that has to make it happen for these two women,” she said. “As much as I loved and cared for Graham, I just thought, I’m gonna end up like my grandmother, kicking the door off the hinges, you know what I mean? It’s like, I better not.”

Det tog lång tid innan Graham Nash klarade att lyssna på albumet, det var för smärtsamt. “I still feel a couple of emotions that shouldn’t go together: One of them is sadness, and the other one is incredulity of how brilliant she is.”

”We needed a sad Christmas song, didn’t we?” sa Joni Mitchell. Sant.
